Privacy Policy

OpenWatch Nigeria collects minimal personal data:

• Account: the email address you sign in with, used to authenticate you and send the alerts you opt into.
• API usage: IP addresses and request counts for rate limiting. No personal identifiers are stored beyond what is needed for rate enforcement.
• Analytics: anonymous usage data (page views, device type) via Vercel Analytics. No personal identifiers are tracked.
• Incident data: sourced entirely from publicly available news reports. No user-submitted reports are collected.
• Device location (mobile app): with your permission, the OpenWatch app uses your device location while the app is open to show security incidents near you and to label your area. Coordinates are sent to our API to fetch nearby incidents; they are not stored against your identity or used to track you.

• We never sell, share, or rent your personal data to third parties

Data is stored on Supabase (hosted on AWS) with row-level security enabled. API usage logs are automatically purged after 7 days.

• Mapbox: interactive map rendering
• Google Geocoding: converting incident locations to map coordinates (no user data is sent)
• Anthropic / OpenAI: incident extraction from news articles (no user data is sent)

You can:

• Request deletion of your data by contacting us
• Access any data we hold about you
• Unsubscribe from alerts at any time via the link in every email

We use a single strictly-necessary session cookie to keep you signed in, and local storage in your browser for theme preferences and Progressive Web App functionality. We measure aggregate, anonymous traffic with Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookieless and does not track you across sites or collect personally identifiable information. We do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.
