Gunmen kill elderly community leader in Benin

Two unidentified gunmen shot dead an 85-year-old community leader at his residence in Iguosa, near Benin City, Edo State, on the night of August 2, 2026.

A factory worker at Rongtai Aluminium Group in Utesi, Ikpoba-Okha LGA, Edo State, died after a forklift accident, sparking violent protests by host community members who alleged the company tried to remove the body without due process. The protest turned violent, resulting in the vandalism of vehicles, equipment, and facilities within the factory, with 35 suspects subsequently arrested.

During the Children's Day celebration at Sam Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, bouncers unlawfully discharged pepper spray, causing panic and injuries to several attendees, leading to one death. The police have arrested three bouncers and a supplier involved in the incident.

A man allegedly killed his girlfriend during an altercation and buried her in a shallow grave in Iyanomon community, Edo State. The suspect has been arrested and will be charged to court.

Gunmen suspected to be hired assassins trailed a Benin-based realtor from church to his shop in the GRA area of Benin City and shot him dead while he was closing up for the day; nothing was taken, pointing to a targeted assassination.

Four hunters from Kano State were arrested in Edo for carrying firearms and cutlasses. This follows the recent killing of 16 hunters from Kano who were mobbed while traveling for Sallah holidays.
4 April 2025 · Esan North East
Sixteen travellers were killed in Uromi, Esan North East LGA of Edo State, prompting the Police Service Commission to remove the Commissioner of Police in charge of the state.
30 March 2025 · Esan North East
A mob intercepted and killed innocent travellers in Uromi, Edo State, prompting the governor to visit the Deputy President of the Senate and assure that the perpetrators will face justice. Fourteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
