9 July 2026 · Enugu North

A commercial bus driver and conductor assaulted a traffic police officer and struck a Distress Response Squad operative with their vehicle at All Saints Roundabout on Abakaliki Road in Enugu on 9 July 2026, causing an AK-47 service rifle to become entangled in the bus and be dragged away. The suspects fled the scene after discarding the rifle at IMT Bus Stop; the weapon and ammunition were recovered intact, and police have launched a manhunt for the pair.

Enugu State Police recovered two vehicles stolen in separate incidents in Imo State, including a Lexus RX 300 SUV stolen during an armed robbery in Owerri in 2018 and a commercial minibus snatched in Okigwe on June 24, 2026. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the Lexus recovery, while suspects in the minibus case fled on sighting police.

Highway robbery attacks have resurfaced on the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway, with armed robbers targeting motorists at night. The latest incident resulted in the killing of a commercial bus driver.

A 28-year-old suspected armed robber and cultist was arrested in Enugu during a police raid, where a fake gun and drugs were recovered. The suspect allegedly used the imitation handgun to rob unsuspecting individuals.

Police in Enugu detained two suspects, including a military impersonator and a cultist, for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition during separate operations. Firearms and other incriminating items were recovered from the suspects.

A suspected armed robber was captured and severely beaten by a mob at Eke Market Square in Enugu State after being found with a stolen pump-action gun. Police intervened to rescue the suspect, who sustained injuries from the mob attack.
